Two artists ruminate on both the physical realm as well as the transcendent in very different but equally moving mediums.
Maria Rendon
Maria Rendón’s paintings and works on paper explore themes of transformation, hybridity, ritualistic experience and landscape. Infused with elements of control and chance, her paintings are inspired by the space between reality and perception, the present and the absent, the normal and the abnormal.
Maria lives and works in Santa Barbara, CA. Her previous solo exhibitions include shows at the Universidad Anahuac in Mexico, and at Mount St. Mary’s College and Random Gallery, both in Los Angeles. Her work was featured in Crave, an art, food and social experience, at the Contemporary Arts Forum (now the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara) in 2012. She has also been in many group exhibitions at venues including the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art, Lotusland, Gallery Nucleus and Santa Monica College.
Jeffrey Gent
Jeffrey Gent’s assemblages are inspired by the regional tradition of found object “yard art” and early 20th century modernist sculpture. The weather-worn objects he finds discarded in the high desert of southern California are incorporated into simple, often totemic, assemblages. An organic palette of sun bleached wood, rust, and old paint is juxtaposed with rough cut blocks of pure white alabaster, cast plaster of paris, and cast cement. Jeffrey attended the Maryland Institute College of Art and received his BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
